Perhaps the one thing that the series "Smallville" got right in their adaptation of Kal-el's youth is the nature of sacrifice: pain endured for self-giving love, which is the one thing that makes Superman a remarkable character. Without that aspect of self-denial, he's just another expression of a yearning for power.
